A drummer's prior responsibility is to lay down a steady drum beat for the band. A drummer should understand and listen to the beats thoroughly and be able to lay a backbeat down like nobody's business; drum fills are secondary.

If the drummer plays hand drums (djembes, bongos, congas etc.), the drummer must keep in mind that, like hands, drum heads also get dry during the winter (keep in mind that, in most cases, they're skins, too).drummers must take a small amount of odorless hand cream and apply it to the palms in their hands to avoid sweat, then rub it around the drumheads. Let it sit for a minute or so and wipe off the excess. It doesn't affect the sound quality and it keeps the skin from drying out and cracking...saves you money on your drum heads and helps in beat going.
